I don’t know about you but when we were deciding where to go on honeymoon, we found it a lot more difficult than we expected. For starters, you’re probably never going to spend this much on a short (2 weeks or less) holiday for the two of you again. Secondly, what if you like doing different things or you don’t want to spend the whole time by the beach? Well to save you at least some of the hassle, though we can’t book it for you, here’s our list of favourite honeymoon destinations…
We’re going to bring you a whole other post on this soon. But let’s start with Safari, Table Mountain and Vineyards…what else do you need on honeymoon? Check out Kruger National Park for amazing safari and The Table Bay Hotel for great breakfasts and views in Cape Town.
These two South East Asian beauties are mostly forgotten in honeymoon land, but if you want culture and beautiful beaches, a two country trip here has to be top of your list. Check out The Privilege Floor at Borei Angkor for luxury close to the temples and why not go on a cruise around Ha Long Bay in Vietnam?
I’m having a real hard time sharing this with y’all. Not because it’s not the most phenomenal honeymoon destination, but because, as someone who grew up here, I kind of want to keep it all to myself! But share I shall. For total luxury, check in to The Chedi, The Grand Hyatt has amazing buffets and romance down to a tee, or if you go between July and October, you have to go camping at Ras al Hadd and watch the Turtles – there are no words for how amazing it is.
Culture, culture, culture. It doesn’t matter what time of year you venture North to Central Europe, there’s always something to do. River Cruises in Summer, Hiking in Spring and Skiing in Winter, plus cities full of history, sidewalk cafés and more museums than you know what to do with. Top tip: Whilst Christmas may be too expensive, if you go in late November or early December, the Christmas markets will be up and running, the rooftops will have a dusting of snow and there’ll be roaring fires behind every open door. Check out The Storchen in Zurich; The Mandarin Oriental in Munich has amazing city views; Hotel Sacher Wien in Vienna is the home of the Sacher Torte, plus it’s right in the heart of the old city; and we are head over heels for this Air BnB apartment in Central Prague – check out that view!
United States of America
When thinking of the States for Honeymoon, most people think Hawaii, maybe Florida. But what about a coast to coast roadtrip? You could fly to LA, drive up the West Coast to Seattle, drop down through Montana with stops at Yellowstone National Park on the Wyoming/Montana border and Mount Rushmore before heading east to D.C with a final stop in the Big Apple before flying home! We loved The Hudson when we were last in NYC (on our own honeymoon!) and this place in DuPont Circle is bursting with character!
For most of Aussies, New Zealand never really enters the honeymoon equation, but don’t discount it. If travelling around in a campervan for a couple of weeks isn’t really your idea of the perfect honeymoon, why not stay in this Lodge in Annandale or Fiordland Lodge on the South Island or splash out and stay at Mollie’s in Auckland (we’d love to stay here when we finally make it over!)
Mexico will always have a special place in our hearts, and we’d recommend it to anyone who’ll listen. For the Caribbean coast, we would recommend Secrets Maroma Beach. We stayed here for part of our honeymoon and had to be torn away at the end. If we had our way, we’d still be here! However, there are plenty of other places to stay! We’ve heard great things about The Beach Tulum or if you fancy a Laguna Beach/The Hills throwback why not stay at Esperanza for romance and luxury (the actual hotel is ME Cabo if you fancy staying there )
These days, when people think of Haiti, they think earthquake and poverty. However, that’s exactly what’s keeping Haiti stuck. It’s the same island as the Dominican Republic and no-one thinks twice about going there. Whilst Haiti may not have the big ticket resorts of its next door neighbour, it does have some beautiful places to stay. We love the look of Habitation Jouissant and Auberge du Picolet.
Brazil has been on everyone’s honeymoon list since Twilight hit our screens. Whilst the house on that island doesn’t exist. You can stay at the house! Oh yes, it’s a vacation rental and you can find it here! Failing that, why not stay in Carnival Central, Rio de Janeiro, itself? The Miramar looks out of this world stunning and The Copacabana is Rio Royalty for good reason!
No honeymoon list would be complete without the Maldives. It may be an oldie, but it’s on every list for a reason! Over-water bungalows friends! The underwater restaurant at the Conrad resort has been rated as the most beautiful restaurant in the world by the New York Times, and The Lux Resort looks like heaven on earth!
Can we do our honeymoon all over again? Is there somewhere you think should be on the list? Where did you go/are you planning to go on your honeymoon?
