Happy Friday lovely! What have you got planned for this weekend? I joined our community garden this past week and my induction is this Sunday! Wish me luck! For those of you that don’t already know, Brisbane is where I currently call home, so I’m pretty well acquainted with the bookshops around here and I thought I’d share a few of my favourites with you, in case you’re ever in town…
Archives Fine Books (40 Charlotte St, Brisbane CBD)
This place is a haven in the middle of the bustling CBD and I love it. I even asked for a job here when we first moved to Brisbane – can you imagine if they’d said yes?! They’ve got everything from fiction to philosophy, politics to fantasy – every bookworm’s dream!
Clarence Corner Bookshop (596 Stanley St, Woolloongabba)
Books + Tea + Cake + Secret Garden = Heaven! These guys specialise in quality secondhand books, out-of-print favourites and they are constantly buying and adding to their shelves so you never know what you’re going to find next. Plus they have a secret garden out the back that’s the perfect place to sit down with a plate of fruit toast, a mug of tea and your new find.
Bent Books (205a Boundary St, West End)
This is my local haunt and it’s a beauty. With over 4000 titles on the shelves, this place is a treasure trove of just-waiting-to-be-found discoveries. The owners and staff are a delight and is there anything better than the smell of that many books in one place?!
Riverbend Books (193 Oxford St, Bulimba)
When I was nannying for a family that lived nearby, I was in here at least once a week. They have a cafe on the front porch that’s the perfect spot for a babyccino and slice of banana bread before a browse of the latest titles. They also have regular Bookchats – a time for local readers to come together, learn about new books, what to read at a book club or what to give as a gift for a bookworm (for those non-literary folk). If you’re after a spot to while away a morning or afternoon (who am I kidding, I could spend a whole day here), this is it! You can thank me later.
Scrumptious Reads (92A Arthur Terrace, Red Hill)
What do you get when you cross a private dining room with a bookstore? Scrumptious Reads! The inspiration was a kitchen library, and boy do they deliver! They have books, magazines, gifts, stationery, supper events and culinary chats – everything every foodie and foodie bookworm could want. They’ve recently moved to a new store in Red Hill and I am in love!
And now I’m off to go and wander these shelves and make my credit card hate me! If you’re ever in Brisbane – give me a shot, I’d love to show you around.
