What To Watch & Read in October
Despite my unending love of October, I’m not a fan of scary movies - or books. I could tell you that I just don’t love them, but in all honesty, I hate them. I’m just a wuss that I can’t even watch Jurassic Park without jumping - and don’t get me started on the Child Catcher, I’m still scarred for life! But that doesn’t mean that I don’t love witches, ghosts, ghouls and magic - I just have to stay far away from the non-PG rated stuff. And I know I’m not the only one who doesn’t have an enduring love of all things horror, so I thought I would share with you the magical things I love to watch and read during October - including a “new to me” series that I’m loving.
You didn’t think I’d write this list and Harry not be the first one, did you?! Ultimately, this is on both lists, and it doesn’t matter where you start - though really, what better time is there to start a HP marathon?
A Discovery of Witches
If I’d been able to watch the series, this would be on that list too - though according to Phoebe, it is well worth the watch if you have Sky or NOW TV. As it is, I’ve been confined to reading the book, but that is absolutely fine by me. Anything that combines magic and Oxford is always going to be high on my list! My favourite morning ritual right now is to put the kettle on and then climb back into bed with a mug of tea to read a chapter or two before I start my day!
This is about as scary as this list is going to get, I’m afraid. Depending on your horror comfort level, this will either be totally fine or not be what you want to read right before bed. But it is a classic for a reason
I warned you that magic + Oxford = my hit list! If you’ve only seen the film (The Golden Compass) and not read the book, get thyself to a bookstore and buy yourself a copy pronto. And whilst you’re there, you may as well pick up the rest of the trilogy too!
C’mon, it’s October - how can you not read/watch Twilight? Vampires! Werewolves! Need I say more?
And whilst we’re on the subject of magic in America, Beautiful Creatures is totally worth a read. The film was terrible and I’m yet to get more than 30 minutes through, but the book is surprisingly captivating.
Okay, I’m not going to bore you and say that you should be watching ALL of the Harry Potters this month because I know that you already know that, so let’s just assume that you’re already doing so and move on, shall we?
The Addams Family & Addams Family Values
What can I say, I’m a sucker for a 90s children’s film. Plus, who doesn’t love seeing Christina Ricci as Wednesday trying to invent numerous ways to inflict pain/maim/kill her brother?!
I told you! 90s films are awesome. If you fancy a little ghost action but you’ve got small people, or are just a total wimp, this is a great one to put on of an evening.
I did not even know about this series until recently, but let me tell you I am hooked already. There are moments that push my limits and it’s probably not something I’d watch before bed, but it’s such a compelling story, I can’t help myself.
Fantastic Beats & Where To Find Them
Need I say more?! Plus, you know it needs a rewatch before Numero Deux comes out next month. Speaking of which, how do we all feel about the Nagini revelation?
Gunpowder, Treason & Plot
I know, it’s not quite November 5th yet, but what better way to get in the mood for bonfires, toffee apples and fireworks than with a binge watch of this BBC beauty? Plus it’s got the wonderful Clémence Poésy in it - need I say more?
Remote Scottish Islands, murder, turbulent weather - what more could you want in October? Plus, Douglas Henshall is an absolute dreamboat in my eyes!
The Bridge & The Tunnel
I realise these are two separate series but with The Bridge there would be no The Tunnel - and that would be an absolute tragedy. If you’re in the mood for some Scandi Noir, grab a blanket, a bottle of red and dive on in. But if it takes you a while to fall asleep, don’t blame me!
This is what I will be watching on Hallowe’en. Not only because it’s a pre-SATC SJP, but also because it’s one of the best 90s magical films and I think it deserves a place in Disney’s Hall of Fame.
So there you have it, a little round-up of everything you need to read and watch this month - because I’m sure you had nothing else planned! If you’ve any recommendations to add, let me know in the comments!
